| This 2 1/2 hour tour paddles by some of the most interesting sights in Little Sarasota Bay ...the Jim Neville reserve, a wildlife preserve just next to the Gulf of Mexico and Spanish Point, a 30 acre tract which exemplifies the history of this area. Spanish Point is most well known for the efforts of Mrs. Bertha Palmer, who was responsible for much of the cultural development in this region, as well as for her success in the real estate, citrus and ranching businesses. The property now has a museum, and numerous attractions: a Sunken Pergola, well attended lawns and gardens, cottages, as well as a church/ private residence / a citrus packing house (all restored) which show aspects of life in the from the 1860's thru early 1900's. There is even a small boat building area where repairs are done. A fresh water spring can be found on the property too - very close to the Intra-Coastal Waterway. There are many more points of interest - it's well worth a walking tour. We'll see it from the water for now. Spanish Point is also the site of an archaeological discovery which is unusual on the Gulf Coast: a burial mound and two shell middens marking a prehistoric culture from almost 5,900 years ago up to approximately 1,100 years ago. An audio-visual display is adjacent to a shell midden which illustrates the customs and culture of the people living here at those times. The gardens are quite an attraction for naturalists and environmentalists due to their wide variety of trees and plants on the property. From there we paddle around the Jim Neville Preserve: a wonderful place to observe many types of birds and marine life found here in Little Sarasota Bay. The trail loops through a 35 acre habitat well known for it's birding and kayaking. You'll learn about mangroves, keys, oysters/oysterbeds, shells, fish, and plant life. We may see dolphins or manatees if the water is warm enough, and (depending on the tide) we can paddle through a short mangrove tunnel. If you love birdwatching, you may see White or Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Anhinga, Cormorants, Ospreys, Great White Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Kingfishers, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Night Herons, Yellow Crowned Herons, Rosate Spoonbills or Bald Eagles. Bring your binoculars and camera. We'll keep some distance away so they are not disturbed, but you'll see a large variety of bird life here. If we have any extra time time we may visit the beautiful vista overlooking the Gulf at Midnight Pass. This is a great place to swim, stop for a short snack, or look for dolphins or sting rays. Depending on the time of day, you may see raccoons foraging, dolphins in the Gulf or Intra-coastal Waterway, and mullet jumping around the kayaks. The preserve is a jewel maintained by Sarasota County, and we are lucky it is here. This tour is offered at a lower price than others are charging, and we give you more personal attention. We want you to enjoy the tour, and recommend us to your friends. Easy Kayaking usually uses touring kayaks instead of the short recreational kayaks often seen. Touring kayaks are a higher quality kayak, safer and they are easier to paddle then recreational kayaks. We usually take 3-4 people on the tour, never more than 6-8 people per guide. This ensures that you'll be able to hear the guide and he'll be near if you need him. We don't send you on a "tour" with dozens of other kayakers, all paddling just to keep sight of the tour guide.
