Southwest Florida is a wonderful area for fossil hunting. It may be hard to imagine, but saber-toothed cats,
giant ground sloths, and sharks up to 60 feet long lived where we now see palm trees and Great Blue
Herons.
Several of the beaches are famous for having sharks teeth, and scuba divers often collect excellent
specimens in the ancient river beds offshore.
The Venice, Nokomis and Englewood beaches are all good places to look, with numerous fossils dating
from the Pleistocene epoch. Sand was added to the beaches in the 1990's to re-nourish them (reducing the
number of sharks' teeth found), but many teeth still wash up on or close to shore and can be found easily.
Other very productive areas are river beds- the Peace River being the most notable in this area. A wide range
of locations on the upper section of the river have produced excellent finds. Shell Creek, near Punta Gorda,
is also good, and it is possible to find arrowheads as well as fossil teeth.
We have had the best luck looking in the Peace River, especially
from the Arcadia or Gardner areas north to Wauchula. Often,
people search near the boat ramps...we have quite an advantage
using kayaks, and can easily move up river to search gravel beds
or washes which are more productive.
November through May are the best months to look. Conditions
are almost perfect then as the water level is low, the water is clear
and comfortable to wade in, and the sunny days allow us to see
fossils more clearly.
We provide the kayaks, all the equipment, and get you started
on finding sharks teeth. We donot disturb private land along the
river. There's no reason to! Searching along the river's edge
works well when rain has washed away soil and exposed
fossils, and so does checking the gravel beds around a bend
in the river. (We keep an eye out for alligators, but don't
recommend bringing very small children or pets on the tour.
We've had NO problems but it pays to be safe).
Most of the fossils we find are black, although some are
different colors due to the minerals they were exposed to.

Here are some of photos from the last few trips. They were exciting, and the largest tooth found (from a
snaggletooth shark) was in excellent condition. A real find!
No permit is needed to collect fossilized teeth, shells or plants. If you want to collect other fossils, you can
easily obtain a permit for this from the museum. Any major finds or unusual specimens you find should be
reported to Florida State Museum of Natural History in Gainesville. Visit there if you can...it's an
OUTSTANDING museum!
We've seen teeth as long as 6" from the tip along the side of the tooth. How would YOU like to be the next
